God has given moms the power of influence. Kids look for influence from peers when they’re teenagers, and the topic of peer pressure becomes a big issue in the family at that age. When their friends show troubling traits we get anxious, but we can put our thumb on the scale by praying behind the scenes!
As we pray for our children, let’s pray for their friends, too.
If there is any doubt of the importance of this, consider what the Bible says:
The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked will lead him astray- Proverbs 12:26.
He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm. – Proverbs 13:20.
1 Corinthians 15:33 says, Bad company corrupts good morals.
Scripture makes it clear that we will be influenced by our friends, and we will take on the character traits of those we spend time with. We begin to think, talk, and act like those we hang out with. Our children’s friends are a preview of who they may become as they spend more time together.
In light of this, I want to include my kids’ friends as I fast and pray on Fridays. Selfishly, I want their spiritual growth to be a positive effect on my child. It’s a big deal as an adolescent to have peers who have a heart to follow God’s ways! The strength that comes from even one friend swimming against the flow is huge!
An exciting part of prayer is when we petition God in one area, and then He leads us into deeper, specific prayer.
His Spirit interacts with us by giving new insight into the battle, and how to be effective in it!
I love and care about these kids my children spend time with. Do they have mothers who stand in the gap for them, battling in prayer? If so, I want to invite their mothers to join the army of Fasting Fridays moms! If these kids don’t have praying moms, then they need one. Who knows what the Lord will do in their lives through someone else’s prayers? What kind of revival does God want to stir up in unlikely hearts? What kind of bigger works is He waiting to do as we learn to wait on Him? Imagine the power God’s Spirit wants to unleash upon this younger generation, as we intercede for them in groups as well as individuals?
When you bring requests before God for your own child, simply include the names of their closest friends. As you pray for greater conviction in your child’s heart, pray the same for his best friends. Asking the Holy Spirit to teach your daughter the fear of the Lord? Do the same for her “besties”. Pray that God’s Spirit would reveal Himself to each of them in their group, and draw their hearts to Himself.
What if I am struggling to fast and pray on Fridays as it is for my own children? This feels like an even bigger burden!
If you are feeling this way, consider that God may want to broaden and deepen your prayer life. By including your child’s friends, you may have greater insight and motivation as to what battles your own child is facing.
There are few things more exciting than praying on target, hitting the heart of the matter in the spiritual realm, and affecting real lives because of it.
So, as we continue to pray for our children’s spiritual growth, let’s broaden our prayers to include the friends who are influencing them. In doing so, let’s also be mindful to invite their moms to join the journey of Fasting Fridays!
Let’s not grow weary while doing good, because in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart!- Galatians 6:9
